Some Things: One Year

What a difference a year makes!

This is Some Things Sunday, the One Year edition.

It’s been ONE YEAR…

1) …since we moved out to Southern California.

There are a lot of places, people, and friends we miss back in Indiana. California’s given us so many  new experiences and opportunities to run, to meet new people, make new connections, and simply enjoy this amazing adventure together.

2) …since we listed our Bloomington, IN house on the market.

Casa Bartley finally sold after over a year on the market! All of our things stayed in Indiana this entire year until we knew where it would go (let’s just say we bought a few essentials at Ikea in the meanwhile!). When the house sold, I came back solo to Bloomington to meet the movers who would pack & take our belongings to the West Coast. I had a wonderful – yet very bittersweet (see #3) – week of enjoying the people and places about Bloomington. It was a drain on the bank account, and although I never realized it before, keeping the house all this time was our big grounding connection to B-Town. On moving day, each room emptied, one by one… and in my head I could replay the reel of all the great memories we’ve had in those rooms as the movers carried out every piece of furniture. My favorite moments were those that we packed our house with runners & close friends/family, and lazy PJ Sundays with puppies.

3) …since the Bartley family began imagining life beyond retail, and then dove in.

In late February (2-3 days after our house closing), the sale of InRunCo to RSG was finalized. Dearest and loveliest friends of ours, I wish that I could have told you about it at the time, as this was a project long in the making; it was a family decision we made together after evaluating where we are (geographically, “aspirationally,” etc.) and what’s important to us. You’re more than just customers – and if you’re reading this, you’re possibly a close friend and a runner I’m grateful to have gotten to know through BARA and by being a part of the store. …And that’s why this household move and my trip back to Bloomington was even more difficult than I could let on.

Bloomington will continue to have a local running shop in Indiana Running Company, and the new ownership will offer more/bigger opportunities for the amazing employees who have been loyal and close to our family over the years. We can’t wait to see how much more InRunCo grows with more resources & new perspectives. Thank you to all of you in our local running community for your love and support!

4) …since I first started experiencing some gut issues.

I’ve left out all the gory details, but I first started noticing what I’ll call digestive problems in January of 2014. I’ve had consistent issues with vitamin B12 deficiency, but this (being afraid to/not able to eat because of the digestive consequences & food sensitivities) was much worse. I used to be afraid of needles a year ago…

Many, many tests and visits to the gut doc later, I’m still not sure if my issues are fully resolved. But, I’m really hopeful now — I’m seeing a family physician and we recently ran some tests that explain a lot of my symptoms. Stress, like I mentioned in my post about 2015 goals, is a huge part of it. Both physicians see stress management and food as a way to heal, with medication to help the process if needed. I’m grateful to have doctors who “get it!”

5) …Since this boy turned 1. Baby boy is TWO YEARS OLD!

They grow up so fast. But he’s my baby forever!

Ps- My mom came to visit me this week while I took a week off of work for a stay-cation, and it was so fun exploring what’s in my own backyard. We went on a whirlwind tour de Southern California/Orange County. Can’t wait to show you what we were up to!

Bartleys! Chris and I miss you. Had no idea InRunCo sold, and I truly hope it is a good thing for the business. I hope our paths cross again soon!

Thanks Emily! We miss you guys too – it was great having Chris out here last year, and you will be the first people we call up when we visit the great Northwest! :)
